Nove Blue Sky

Minkä värinen on taivas? SIninen. Koulu, jossa työskennellään on nimeltään Nove Blue Sky. Nuorilla on erilaisia kognitiivisia haasteita. Diagnooseja olemme koittaneet kysellä, mutta vastaukset on hieman laveita. Käsittääksemme kuitenkin Suomen mittapuussa suurimmalla osalla on kehitysvamma, ainakin toiminnasta päätellen (Noora tietty tehnyt jo monta diagnoosia, haha :).

Nuoret tekee paljon päivänaskareita itse, kuten siivoaa, tekee ruokaa, ruokkii eläimiä (pari vuohta, ankkoja ja kaneja on pihakarsinassa). Veden nuoret hakee läheiseltä lähteeltä. Resurssit koululla on varmasti Ugandalaisittain melko hyvät (?), koska nuorten vanhemmat on koulun rahanlähde. Opetustyyli on myös aika erilainen verraten siihen, mihin me olemme tottuneet.

Toisen tarkoitus on antaa nuorille positiivisia ajatuksia itsestään voimauttavan valokuvauksen kautta. Kuvaushetket olivat hienoja kohtaamisia. Toisen projektin tavoite on kerätä kierrätysmateriaaleista valmistetuista jääkaappimagneeteista rahaa koulun uutta rakennusta varten.

Yksi oppilaista totesi päivän jälkeen: "You make us happy!" Noista hymyistä ja kommenteista kerää voimia jokaiseen työpäivään.

What is the color of the sky? It's blue. We been trying to teach this for past couple of weeks for one of our young students at our school. Also gymnastic for girls, cooking lessons, crafting, teaching math and computer skills. School is called Nove Blue Sky. It's kind of a boarding school but looks like a regular house. There is 12 students, from age 13-30. They all live there 2 months at a time, and every third month they have a family vacation. At school there is only one teacher, 35 year old man who lives with them, and is extremely dedicated to his work. Kids have different kind of cognitive challenges. We've been asking for diagnoses but got pretty vague answers. Tho we believe, thru finnish standards, most of the kids have a mental disability. After 4 weeks, guess how many diagnoses Noora has made already!?

The kids do their own chores, like cleaning, cooking, feeding the animals (3 goats, ducks and rabbits). Water they have to carry from the well near by. The school have better resources than generally in Uganda (?) but mainly because of the parents. Few of them are orphans so donations are not that much. Every one in the school is unique in the their own way, so the teaching is individualized. But with only one teacher and few volunteers you can't consider everybody's needs all the time. You can't waste any material, and when in class, one does and others pay attention. Sometimes we are running out of imagination because you just can't use/waste material like we do in Finland. Teaching method is also very different comparing to what we are used to. We always cheer and give positive feedback if the kids did well, and our local volunteers (3 young guys) keeps on wondering our enthusiasm.

We started 2 project with the kids. The other one gives positive thoughts about them selves thru empowering photographing. And have to say the sessions with them has been great. The second project is all about collecting funds for building a new school, which they already started to built. We are making (..kids are making) fridge magnets from recycled materials. We need your help too. We're going to make an update just for this one. Soon you will know more.

Every day we get so many smiles, and thanks that we came to work in the morning. One of the students said after a school day: "You make us happy!". With those smiles and comments, we collect energy for the next day.

21.3.2012 Wednesday The tear gas day!

Kampalan pääkatu normaapäivänä. / Mainstreet of Kampala on a regular day.

We had a day off and decided to spend it in Kampala. We wanted to get to know the city a bit better, and have a nice day out. It was way more than what we expected.

We walked around the old town and especially this big market area that was inside 3 different buildings. We were on top of the first building when we heard noises from the street below. Mari asked what was going on, and the answer was that the opposition leader had just passed by in a car with police escort. Well this did not tell us anything and no one told us that it would be better to leave Kampala. So we moved on to the third building which was just next to the street where the crowd was. In half an hour everything changed from positive to negative. We walked into the building, and moved up to the second floor. Then we noticed that the guards were locking the doors, and the situation was getting worse. A thought came in mind… AVOID BIG CROWDS! So we stepped away from the door, and all of a sudden we heard two gun shot/bomb like sounds. Minutes to the realization that it was tear gas, someone shouted "Don't breath!". People were bouncing around and since the doors were locked there was no way out. Although the situation was under control, we felt like we were left in the dark. Our heads were filled with crazy thoughts: most of all, keep calm, stay put, and take care of others. So we did. We were calm and breathing with a scarf on our faces because the air was full of gas. Noora wet her face with water which in this case was a mistake… Its better not to use water at all because without water the gas doesn't sting the skin that much. We waited for half an hour for the doors to open again, and we decided to head to the big shopping mall for lunch. We got some dark bread and talked it over.

After the situation, locals were asking on the street "Muzungu (white), are you ok?" and said "Sorry". We left with the feeling that we are being taking care of! Ooo btw, it's on BBC News Africa.

Jinja

Tuntuu hölmöltä kirjoittaa Jinjan retkestä, koska tällä viikolla on tapahtunut niin paljon. Tänään tai huomenna saatte tekstiä eilisestä. Ensin kuitenkin Jinjakuulumiset.

Viime viikonloppuna matkattiin miniluksuslomalle Jinjaan, joka on noin 80:n kilometrin päässä Kampalasta. Matkaseuraksi saatiin kanadalainen talomme asukas.

Loistokasta.

Feels bit funny to write about our trip to Jinja because this week has been one of the craziest so far. You get to read about it soon...this week still! First Jinja.

Last weekend we went to Jinja which is about 80 km from Kampala. There was us and our canadian friend from UPA. Jumped on a regular bus but first needed to discuss (read argue) the prize which in this case was half what they asked for. The bus won't leave until it's full, so it took 1,5 hours before the bus actually moved. Whilst waiting for the bus to make a move it filled up with all sorts of sales men/women from shoes to solar panels. The journey to Jinja was hot and sweaty but fast, about 2 hours long and it was nice to see better roads and lush country side.

Jinja gave us what we wanted/needed. People were friendly and happy (must be the tourism tho) the place is beautiful, peaceful, clean and very chilled. We definitely enjoyed every minute especially the luxurious running HOT water, fresh salads and proper breakfast. We went to see the sunset at river Nile with boda bodas and after that it was like we never showered at all! Coming back was a smooth ride on the back of this huge hummer like vehicle with local music producer! The western lifestyle took us over and when we returned to Kampala on sunday night we went to Garden City (local mall) for burgers!

We got much needed energy and now we are planning our next weekend get away. Just brilliant!

Waiting is the worst, towards anything is better … Or is it? - Odotamme edelleen.

Meillä oli eilen se 'kiireellinen' turvallisuuskokous. Talon asukkaat saapui töistänsä paikalle kahdeksi, kuten kutsu kävi. No oishan se pitänyt jo tietää parin viikon kokemuksella … palaveri alkoi viideltä.

Puhelinoperaatio jatkuu edelleen. Sanoivat, etttä huomenaamulla kello yhdeksän toimii. Mari on toiveikas, Noora epäilee. Ootellaan.

Yesterday we had that 'urgent security meeting'. All volunteers were ready for the meeting at 2pm, like we were asked to. Well, we should have already learned… meeting started at 5pm. We sat in a circle on plastic chairs outside of the house, when the head police of Nansana came around. He was asking us questions, most of them were kind of normal but are you married or single got us laughing. Situation was, once again, hilarious and none of us understood what was this meeting all about. At least they convinced us that they are taking care of us and we'll be safe.

Since we've started to work we're waking up round 7.30, it seems to be the only moment in a day we have some kind of hint what time it is. And we actually started to do something at work. We also have lot of ideas, we're gonna tell you about them later. Kids (age 13-30) at our school are mentally handicapped or have some other challenges. We're doing a lot of different things with them. Yesterdays moment was when we taught few guys number three (it was a huge step for them, as we heard). Also one of the young ones learned that the sky is not green.

We haven't got running water now for a week, what means that we are washing ourselves with bucket water or with rain water. Electricity hasn't run too well either. Headlights has become our new accessories every evening. Oh and you have no idea how happy we were when we finally got our own room. We decorated the room with scarfs, boxes and handmade baskets from the street and believe you me -IT LOOKS GREAT. Operation 'working mobile number' is still on. They said it supposed to be working tomorrow morning. Mari is hopeful, Noora is doubtful. We will see!

Sovittiinko perjantaiksi? / Did he say on friday?

Pienet asiat kestää melkolailla, kuten puhelinnumeron hankkiminen…

So its time to tell you about the tiny things like getting a mobile number… We thought its going to be easy to go and buy a pre paid, set it up and you're done but no no! We bought 2 different pre paids, cheapest ones we could find. They didn't work. So Mari bought a new one, which should be better. Docent work either. Then we heard that if you have a number you have to register yourself with a passport and photos and after doing that it'll work. Mari did that on wednesday and the lady said its working on friday… mmmm its been four days now and still nothing.

On friday we were invited to a Bday/going away party in Kampala. All of us from UPA was going there so somebody fixed us a ride. We were ready at five and the car showed up at seven and all because of the traffic jams. From Kampala to Nansana takes about 30 mins. Finally we had a car and 15 people who we're ready to hit the road. Small problem tho… the car had seats for 8 ppl. Well actually it wasn't a problem only bit uncomfy for ones who were underneath the human pile like Noora. We had an easy ride to Kampala. Seriously!

We arrived to the party and there was a security guard waiting for us with a huge gun on his shoulder and the place where we were was surrounded with barbwire for … our guess is security reasons. In african way there was food and drinks as much as there was music, noise and hip shaking. Noora's moment was when she got to hold a cutest baby ever and when the family was leaving, mom said that "He's now your son too". Becoming a mother in a half an hour, wow!

And FYI we were told that we have a security guard at the house too. He's lurking in the bushes and appears only if something happens!

Nansana

Nansana on paikka jossa me asutaan, noin puoli tuntia Kampalasta.

Tänään on naistenpäivä, mikä täällä tarkoittaa vapaapäivää töistä. Me ajateltiin nauttia vapaasta menemällä altaalle, joka on melko lähellä. Moikka!

We live in a place called Nansana, which is bout half an hour from Kampala. Our house is located on a small alley from the main street of Nansana. If you head to the left, you'll end up in a "forest" and on your right side you'll find main street. If you want to cross the street, you need a 'slot of patience and courage. On Tuesday we were forced to use boda boda's (a motorcycle) and we did it with 4 people on it!!  We use Matatu's if we're going to Kampala, which is a little van. It'll leave when it's full, about 20 people on board and you should negotiate the prize before you jump in. Our workplace is really close by, so we don't have to deal with the chaotic traffic every day. Yesterday we went to the supermarket and on the way there we saw this and that. Here's some for ya!

Today is international women's day, which means that its a day off from work. Traditionally men are doing all the housework/taking care of the kiddies on this day and women are enjoying it. In Uganda women are doing a lot of work, so its pretty fair that there is one day in a year that the situation has turned around. And we are planning to go to a pool! Bye!

Meidän talo - Our house

Tavarat saapui. Tuuletettiin. Suihkuun on aamuisin jono.

Mari in the house.

We finally got our bags, WOOOOOP! First thing, we had to dig out some finnish chocolate and salmiac. Mari had to search for her hair cutting scissors since one of the volunteers wanted to cut off her dreads.. It was..well confusing n disturbing.. like many other moments in the house so far. We feel like we're on this extended festival/commune/hostel sort of thing but sober!
There' s 15 people living in this house, from all over the globe + Eddy the caretaker who takes care off things like do we have enough toilet paper (!!!) So answer to your questions about it, YES we have a proper toilet and it usually works. Outside we have a squat toilet tho and it becomes more and more familiar to us. So you probably can imagine how hard it is to share a toilet, shower, tiny gas stove and a living room with 15 other people. It often smells like rise or porridge in the kitchen. And the queue to the shower….!
After negotiating as being the oldest ones in the house we we're promised a shared room and when that actually happens, Mari gets out from "in transit" room and docent have to sleep (read suffer) in a bunk bed and Noora docent have to change rooms nonstop.
Electricity works most of the time and we do have running water since its the rainy season. Doing our laundry under equator sun using our fists but we slept like babies every night and many things makes us laugh a lot!

These first days has been our orientation week. Tomorrow we're going to see our project which is called Nove Blue Sky.

Jos haluatte meitä jollain muistaa niin osoite meille on/if you want to send us letters or cards or whatever pops in mind, heres our address

Rocky road

Sanoivat: juoskaa! No niin me sitten tehtiin, juostiin muuten kovaa. Perillä oltiin 4.30 aamuyöstä. Laukut eivät, niiden selvittelyyn meni tunti. Kun vihdoin saavuimme Afrikkaan, olimme nukkuneet kahden vuorokauden sisällä noin neljä tuntia, oli siis jo aika liikaa vaadittu että oltais tajuttu olevamme perillä.

Pari ekaa päivää on menny lainatessa tavaroita: pyyhettä, saippuaa, ruokaa, petivaatteita, hammastahnaa ja rahaa (Nansanassa, jossa asumme, ei toiminut perjantaina yksikään automaatti). Jättionni kohtaa huomenna, jos saamme vihdoin laukkumme. JEEEEEEE!

AIka paljon kaikkea mistä kirjoittaa, mutta kerromme niistä teille seuraavassa. Nettitikku saatiin tänään, jotta tulette kuulemaan meistä.

Kaikki hyvin!

Thursday morning 4 am, Mari woke up. Noora's alarm was on at 5.30 am… We had a talk… Well actually Mari said couple of not so flattering words in finnish, closed the door and we slept one more hour before heading to the airport. Tip number one: always check with the one you're traveling with WHAT TIME THE FLIGHT LEAVES!

We got to the airport ( on time ) and when we checked in the woman behind the counter looked at us and said, going to Uganda? In the end she asked us to take care of each other… We got on to the plane when the pilot announced that London is too foggy and we have to wait in Helsinki about an hour. Now we we're bit worried about the fact that we only have 1,5h to change the plane at Heathrow. After an hour waiting for a permit from London we thought that ok, we have to stay one night in london. We are not going to make it on time. When we eventually arrived to london, we had a new flight ahead of us: Egypt Air and Cairo. So we spend hours in london and we definitely needed to contact UPA in Uganda because there would be somebody coming to pick us up. The flight to Cairo was late an hour or bit more and we only had an hour to change the flight in Cairo… another thing to worry about! (so far we've been up about 36 hours) the manager of egypt air was on the same flight and he was kind enough to help us, he took care that we would not miss our flight to Entebbe. Rest of the flight we got seat's from first class so we could run out when we land. And so we did and we made it!
We landed to 4.30 am but our bags didn't so we had to sort out that for another hour… We were pretty tired but we managed to arrive to Africa.

First couple of days we been borrowing stuff from others like towels, soap, food, sleeping bags, toothpaste and money (In Nansana where we live none of the ATM's were working on friday). Tomorrow is a lucky day, we might get our bags WOOP WOOP!

So much things to tell you guys, today we bought an internet/usb stick so you will hear from us soon!
All is good!
